A water bong is the preferred method of smoking for many. There are many types of bongs to choose from on the market. Many people believe that you must master a water bong to be an expert smoker. Smoking from a water bong does require a bit of instruction for first time bong smokers.
An important thing to note is that bongs are illegal, when you go to a head shop to purchase one you should ask for a water pipe, or you may not be served.
A water bong has a carb, or a stem with a bowl attached that you pull which permits outside air pressure into the bong chamber while simultaneously pushing smoke into your lungs. Plexiglass or plastic bongs normally have a hole drilled into the changer of the bong itself which performs the carb function.
To smoke using a bong fill the chamber with as much smoke as you think you can inhale. Either pull the stem or let go of the carb hole and suck the smoke into your lungs. This should be a smooth draw, although coughing will occasionally occur.
Make sure you fill the chamber of the bong with either cold water or some people like to use hot water. Most people use cold water or put ice in their bongs. If you fill the chamber too full of water you will get water on your lips when you smoke from it. Not enough water in your bong is a problem also, if the bong chamber does not have enough water in it the smoke will not be cooled and won't be filtered properly.
Some people like to fill the water bong chamber with liquid other than water. There those that have used juice, alcoholic beverages, and various other liquids like milk in their bongs when they don't have water. This is not recommended because it will get your bong dirty, sticky and make it hard to to clean, not to mention the health risk that may be associated with using other liquids.
When smoking in a group, make sure to clear the bong of the smoking material entirely before passing it to the next person. Also, clear the bong of stale smoke by blowing backwards into the stem hole with the stem removed. The stale smoke will come out of the mouthpiece of the bong.
You will want to change your bong water often as the bong water becomes polluted as you smoke it. If the bong water gets too dirty it will begin to stink, and affect the taste of your smoke. If you keep your bong water fresh you will not have to clean your bong as often.
Bongs can vary in their shape, size, materials and colors. You will have to experiment with different water bongs if you can to figure out which you like the best. Water bongs can be a somewhat large investment if you buy a high end bong costing over 200 dollars and more. It pays to find out what type of bong you really want before investing in one.
One drawback of a water bong is the smelly water after prolonged use, and if a bong with nasty water in it gets knocked over by accident it can leave a stain on a carpet, and leave a smell for days. It is best to avoid this by keeping your bong water clean, which also provides a smoother smoke.
